Spring Lawn Care Tips

4/28/2025

As winter fades and spring showers begin, it’s time to start thinking about lawn care once again! Some effort early on in the season can set you up for success for the rest of the year. Here are some essential spring lawn care tips to get your lawn in top shape.

Rake and Remove Debris

Winter can leave behind a layer of dead leaves, twigs, and other debris. Raking your lawn in early spring helps remove this buildup, allowing air and sunlight to reach the grass. This also prevents mold and dead patches from occurring.

Aerate the Soil

Compacted soil can hinder root growth and water absorption. If your lawn experiences heavy foot traffic, consider aerating the soil. Aeration involves removing small holes of soil to improve oxygen, water, and nutrient flow to the roots.

Apply Pre-Emergent Weed Control

Get ahead of weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide early in the season to stop seeds from germinating. While issues may still arise, this is the best course of action to cut down on the number of weeds you may see.

Fertilize for Strong Growth

Find a fertilizer that provides essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which promote healthy grass growth. A good tip is to find a slow-release fertilizer to sustain your lawn over time without excessive growth spurts.

Reseed Bare Patches

If your lawn has thin or bare spots, overseeding can help fill in those areas. Choose a grass seed blend that suits your climate and soil type for the best results. Lay straw down to hold moisture and encourage germination.

Mow with Care

As your grass starts to grow, set your mower to the right height—typically around 2.5 to 3 inches. Avoid cutting more than one-third off your grass as this can stress the lawn and weaken its roots.

Control Pests and Diseases

Look out for signs of lawn pests, such as grubs or fungal diseases. Treat problems early with solutions to prevent widespread damage.

Maintain Lawn Equipment

Before the mowing season is in full swing, check your lawn equipment and follow our spring guide to get up and running.

Planting for a Beautiful Lawn and Garden

Beyond the general maintenance of your lawn, spring is the perfect time to start planting around your home and garden. Consider planting:

  • Cool-season grasses: Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, or ryegrass if your lawn needs a refresh.
  • Perennials: Tulips, daffodils, swamp milkweed ,and blue false indigo for vibrant spring colors.
  • Shrubs and hedges: Lilacs, burning bushes, or hydrangeas to add structure and greenery.
  • Ground covers: Creeping thyme or clover to reduce maintenance and add visual interest.
  • Vegetable and herb gardens: Crops like lettuce, spinach, carrots, and chives to enjoy fresh produce. Make sure to germinate seeds inside and plant once it warms up outside.

By following these spring lawn care tips, you’ll set your yard up for a season of healthy growth and vibrant greenery. With a little preparation and consistent maintenance, you’ll enjoy a beautiful lawn all spring and summer long!
